Shaped circular, the base on four lion's-paw and foliate feet, the part-fluted body with gadrooned and shell shoulder, the leaf-clad reeded upswept handles with lion's-mask joins, the reeded spout with lion's-mask terminal and anthemion-shaped ivory spigot, the cover part-fluted and with fluted disk finial, the interior with a pig compartment, the cover engraved with a crest, the body with a coat-of-arms, helm and motto within foliate mantling, marked on side, interior compartment, cover and finial

The arms are those of Balfour impaling those of Maitland, with a crescent for difference, as borne by James Balfour, second son of John Balfour of Balbirnie, who married Lady Eleanor Maitland, daughter of James. 8th Earl of Lauderdale, in 1815. He died in 1845.
