A VERY RARE LARGE YUEYAO BEAR-FORM JAR
WESTERN JIN DYNASTY
The compressed pear-shaped vessel with a waisted shoulder moulded with a dramatic bear mask in relief with almond-shaped eyes, flared nostrils and open jaw revealing a full set of teeth and tongue below pricked up ears, with applied rope twist handles to the side ending in hands resting on rope twist legs and ending in paw feet, the reverse with a moulded ridged backbone, the body impressed by circular florettes, all below a galleried rim and covered in a thin olive-green glaze (one hand restored, glaze flakes)--7 7/8in. (19.6cm.) high
