The sitter, was the elder son of George Pretyman (1659-1727), lord of the manors of Bacton, Newhall, Bresworth, Cotton and Old Newton. He married Jane, daughter and heir of Rev. John Pistor, Rector of Claydon, in 1711, and built Bacton Hall between 1715-20. He died in 1738.

John Fayram was a portrait painter and copyist whose dated portraits are much in the manner of Enoch Seeman and range from 1727-1743. According to the contemporary diarist, George Vertue, he subscribed to Kneller's Academy in 1713. He also painted and etched landscapes of views near London.
