The old Mint was situated on the River between Hastings and Hare Street, Calcutta, was moved to its new quarters between the northern end of Clive Street and the Strand in 1831. William Prinsep in a letter to his brother James recalls the laying of the foundations in October 1923. James was Master of the Benares Mint and succeeded Horace Wilson as Assay Master at Calcutta. Thomas Prinsep executed another watercolour of the New Mint in the collection of the India Office Library (WD4190).
