AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED RHYTON
Circa 350-340 B.C.
Molded in the form of a maltese dog's head, black-glazed, its pointed ears emerging from a thick coat, with a long, narrow muzzle, the eyes in added white, the pupils black, the bowl with an everted rim, with Pan seated in left profile with his pipes in his raised right hand, his shepherd's staff resting in the crook of his left arm, nude but for a mantle draped over his left arm, two short upturned horns on his forehead, a fillet and rosettes in the field, palmette complexes on either side of the handle, a band of wave below the scene, ovolo on the rim
