Born and trained in Lyon, Biard travelled throughout his career, to Egypt and Syria on the corvette La Bayadère in 1827-8, to the Arctic regions, visiting Greenland, Lapland, Spitzbergen and the Arctic along with Siberian Coast in the late 1830s and early 1840s, and to Brazil, towards the end of his career, in 1858.
