Montana Wines first sold its wine under the Montana brand in 1952. By the end of the 60's the company had established itself as New Zealand's largest winemaker. In 1973 Montana planted the first vines in Marlborough, a region now famous for its unique style of Sauvignon Blanc. Innovation and vision have seen Montana gain a 40 share of the New Zealand market. Winners of many prestigious awards, there are few other winemakers who can produce such large quantities of quality wine in sparkling, white and red wine categories.

1996 was yet another excellent year for red wines in Hawkes Bay. Weather conditions combined to produce concentrated berries of good colour and firm tannin structure. Bordeaux style winemaking techniques were used to create a wine with complexity, good tannin structure and soft acidity, which will continue to develop within the bottle.
