A design for the north city gate in Trier, situated next to the Porta Nigra, the famous Roman monument also called Sankt Simeon because it incorporated a small Romanesque church, demolished in 1804.
Balthasar Neumann is best known for his design of the Würzburg Residence with its famous staircase (finished 1744) decorated with frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo (1750-53). He was also involved in several projects at the court of Kurfürst-Erzbischof Franz Georg von Schönborn (1722-56) in Trier, among them the decoration of the church of Sankt Paulinus and several fortifications in and around the city.
