A Japanese Arita bowl
The porcelain and interior enamels late 17th Century, the decoration by Ignaz Preissler circa 1725
The lower part of the exterior moulded and incised to resemble a lotus flower, the interior painted in the Kakiemon palette with a bouquet of flowers tied with a tasselled ribbon, embellished in Schwarzlot with various insects in flight and at rest, the exterior in Sgraffito Schwarzlot and gilding with a continuous seascape with fortified lighthouses, settlements and distant cities surrounded by a profusion of galleons and sailing vessels, the foreground of one side with merchants at discussion on a shore and the other side with two giant warriors riding sea monsters, the lotus petals below embellished with gilt ogival ornament divided by Schwarzlot scrolling foliage at the intersections (interior with wear to enamels, exterior with wear to gilding), sold with an ormolu mount with three scroll feet
