Louis-Charles-Antoine Désaix de Veygoux (1768-1800) French General, was born in the castle of Ayat (in the Auvergne). After joining active service he became the right-hand man of Prince Victor de Broglie (1718-1804). Both Broglie and Désaix protested against the suspension of the King. Desaix was consequently arrested and imprisonned for 2 months. After his release, Carnot appointed him adjoint a l'état-major de l'armée du Rhin, and he was soon to rise to général de division. But he was temporarily suspended by the Jacobins who were determined to destroy his politcal career. However, when the Directoire announced that armed forces were being gathered in England, Desaix was promoted 'chef d'etat-major'. He was involved in the Maltese campaign and then the Egyptian campaign (upper Egypt in particular). He died at the Battle of Marengo (Spain).
