the 6in. diameter card signed Cameron & Blakeney PATENT Glasgow & Sunderland with Royal cypher serving as the compass star, set within a brass glazed bowl with side pins for gimball mounting, fixed within a brass bound oak display stand with hinged glazed lid and securing hook with brass plaque to front engraved W. HENN RN R.N.Y.C. GALATEA 1885 -- 41in. (104cm.) high

Galatea was built by J. Reid & Co and registered in Glasgow, 1885, the owner being listed as 'Mrs. Wm. Henn'; a steel cutter of 86tons she measured 90.5 x 15 feet. Internally she was lavishly appointed and resembled a country house rather than a serious contender for the America's Cup in which she challenged the American Mayflower in 1886 -- aided by her resident crew monkey called 'Peggy' who ran up and down the bowsprit shrieking encouagement whenever they were in the lead!
