Company painting never developed on a large scale in western India. Occasionally a European would employ an Indian artist to carry out private commissions, but this was not commonplace in the western regions. It was not until the mid-19th Century that sets of pictures depicting trades and castes were regularly produced in western India and sold in Bombay.
