STEWART, Charles. Elements of the Natural History of the Animal Kingdom ... the Second Edition, Edinburgh: Bell & Bradfute, 1817. 2 volumes, 8°, 12 folding engraved plates (lightly spotted and browned), contemporary half calf gilt (rubbed), "A. R. Burt, Miniature Painter, 1817", inscription on title of volume II.
Both volumes are copiously illustrated, mostly in the margins, with watercolour illustrations, the work of the miniaturist Albin Roberts Burt (1783-1842). (See Daphne Foskett's Miniatures - Dictionary and Guide (1987)). In addition, the endpapers of both volumes are heavily annotated in an early hand: "On taking off the skin of Birds," "Another Method of Preserving Birds," "The Advantages of the Study of Natural History," "On Preserving Fish..." (2)
