The crossbanded serpentine top with molded edge, over a conforming case with four graduated drawers with brass bail pulls, on bracket feet with volute angles, each drawer with S-shaped brass keyhole, the top drawer formerly with a writing slide, brasses replaced

This chest features the unusual S-pattern keyhole found almost exclusively on furniture produced by Thomas Chippendale, including the bookcases supplied to Sir Penistone Lamb for the Library at Brocket Hall in 1772-1775 and a clothes-press supplied to Harewood House in circa 1768-1770 (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol.II, figs.77, 80, 249 and 267). Its elegant simplicity recalls furniture supplied for Ninian Home at Paxton House in Scotland from 1774-1791.
