The present bronze is a cast of an original model by Pompon (d. 1933) of a boston-terrier, or bull-dog, commissioned by the chocolatier, Georges Menier, in 1930. Toy posed for a total of nine sittings between April and October 1930, before the plaster model (whereabouts now unknown) was complete. The bronze for Menier, cast by Valsuani, was finished in February 1931 and on the death of his widow was left to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. The bronze was subsequently edited by Valsuani in limited numbers.
