A ruddy sheldrake
with inscription and date 'Casarca rutila;/Ruddy Shieldrake. [sic] J.954./Jarafgunge. 22d Feb 81./Found all over India in the cold season only, in pairs chiefly but also in/small parties, frequenting rivers and lakes. It walks well and grazes in/the young cornfields just like Geese, it also picks up fallen seeds of grass or/grain. It breeds across the Himalayas. As the time of migration for/the purpose of breeding approaches, the male's plumage assumes a/deeper and brighter hue as in above illustration.' (lower centre)
