It is interesting to note that the first shield is unusual as the quarters for France are normally borne in one and four (top-left and bottom-right) and not in two and three (top-right and bottom-left). If the shield is reversed the lions would be facing the wrong way.
The second shield appears to date from before 1340, when the Royal Arms of France were incorporated as part of the Claim to the Throne of France. This shield is also unusual as the lions are shown as reguardant (ie. looking back over their shoulders).
