Private Joseph Rowe does not appear to be entitled to the 'Lucknow' clasp, or not at least for services with the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was, however, a Crimea veteran of some distinction, having participated in a very gallant seven-man assault on a Russian rifle pit in the Quarries. Three men from his party were awarded the V.C., but not Rowe or the leading N.C.O., the latter having acted without orders. At the time an Acting Corporal, he was slightly wounded (see Rifle Green in the Crimea for further details).
