Private James Harwood was born in Wansted, Essex and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in London in August 1843. He subsequently served for eight years in North America and seven years in India, in addition to the Crimea where he was present in the operations before Sebastopol. Harwood was discharged as a result of being 'unfit for further service' in November 1865, his record carrying evidence of three Court-Martial appearances and 21 entries in the Regimental Defaulters Book.
