Corporal James Short was born in the Parish of Corick, near Tulavin in Cavan and enlisted locally as a Boy Recruit in the Rifle Brigade in July 1841, aged 14 years. In addition to his verified services in the Crimea, which include the Battle of the Alma, he was also present in the Lucknow operations during the Indian Mutiny. Short lost his 'Stripes' on at least two occasions, finally being discharged as a Corporal in late 1866.
