Private Samuel Chant was born in the Parish of Odcombe, near Yeovil in 1825 and enlisted in the Plymouth Division of the Royal Marines in 1844. Drafted to H.M.S. Calliope, he served in the New Zealand operations of 1846-47 and purchased his discharge soon after his return to the UK in 1849. His late issue N.Z. Medal was actually awarded to him in 1881.
