A QUEEN ANNE BLACK AND GILT-JAPANNED TOILET-MIRROR ON STAND
Decorated overall with foliate latice-work, foliage, figures, birds, animals and landscape scenes, the rectangular mirror plate in a moulded border with re-entrant angles at the top and shaped cresting, on square supports, the rectangular fall-flap enclosing a fitted interior of five small drawers and three pigeon holes with conforming decoration above a waved fitted frieze drawer, the stand with square legs joined by a shaped X-shaped stretcher centre by a leaf and on inverted scrolled feet, one drawer with ink inscription to the underside 'Joseph.../unk/...Joseph Middleton/he is arroga.../and sharp', the decoration refreshed, the cresting and stiles possibly replaced, the ½ in. section between the bureau and the stand replaced, restorations

A dressing-box and mirror-on-stand of this type at Blair Castle, Perthshire was described as a 'Union Suit' in the early 18th Century (A. Coleridge, 'John Hodson and some cabinet-makers at Blair Castle', The Connoisseur, April 1963, pp. 229-230, fig. 15).
