Signed Kyukoku, Edo Period (19th Century)
Brown lacquer ground; decoration in gold and red takamaki-e, shell and ceramic; compartments, shoulders and rims black lacquer; risers black lacquer with floral decoration in chinkinbori [incised lines filled with gold foil]; signed in gold hiramaki-e underneath Kyukoku with a kao; metal ojime with bird and leaf designs
The front with a tai [snapper] prepared for the table; the reverse with mizuhiki [decorative paper threads] threaded through a ceramic holder
