The present pair of figures relates to the oeuvre of François Duquesnoy (1597-1643), who is known for depicting frolicking putti and infants as free-standing sculpture or busts, as well as in cast narrative plaques. Another pair of reclining infants that belong to this same tradition and are dated 18th Century, demonstrating the subject's enduring popularity, is illustrated in The French Bronze: 1500 - 1800, Exhibition Catalogue, M. Knoedler & Co., New York, 1968, cat. no. 63.
