Compare with related larger examples of stupas, such as the cloisonne enamel and gilt-bronze models accommodating Buddhist figures included in the exhibition Buddhist Art from Rehol, illustrated in the Catalogue, nos. 77 and 79, and the cloisonne enamel pagoda illustrated by Brinker and Lutz, Chinese Cloisonne, The Pierre Uldry Collection, no. 279. In all three instances, the design of animal masks enhanced by beaded jewellery chains is similar to that on the present lot. This form of decoration may be traced to the ornate jewellery adorning Buddhist figures which probably formed the inspiration.
