AN APULIAN RED-FIGURE PATERA
attributed to the Painter of Athens 1714
Circa 365-355 B.C.

The deep dish with low ring foot, the serpentine handle with applied rosettes, the interior black glazed, one side of the exterior with, from left to right, a standing nude youth with two spears and a sword, a mantle draped over his left arm, a standing woman wearing a peplos and himation, a phiale in her left hand, a fillet in her right, a nude youth seated on his mantle, with a sword, spear and shield, and a standing nude youth, a mantle draped behind him and over his arms, with two spears and a pilos-helmet, two windows in the background, the other side with a nude youth in the center seated on his mantle, a thyrsos in his right hand, a phiale in his left, behind him a standing nude youth with a mantle draped behind him, a staff in his right hand, and to the right, a standing draped woman holding a wreath, a window between them, a band of egg on the rim, meander with saltire squares below, palmettes below the handles, intact, 15 3/4in. (40cm.) diam.
