The modelling of the face and the execution of the hair in the present picture can be compared closely with Ketel's The Company of Dirck Jacobsz. Rosecrans and Lieutenant Pauw, signed and dated 1588, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. C378). A date in the 1590's for the present portrait would thus eem plausible.
