In 1686 Mary Wynter, the only surviving daughter and heir of John Wynter of Dyrham, married William Blathwayt (?1649-1717), who was Secretary of War between 1683 and 1704, and Secretary of State between 1692 and 1701. Between 1692 and 1704 he completely rebuilt the original manor house at Dyrham. It has been suggested that the present picture may have been a wedding portrait, showing the future East Front of Dyrham, yet to be built.
