etching extensively touched in ink, circa 1892-3, on tissue-thin Japan, a unique working proof of the first (and presumably only) state, erroneously identified by Kennedy as the second state, signed with the butterfly and inscribed 'imp.' in pencil on the tab, inscribed '2nd proof' and signed with an additional butterfly on the reverse, some staining at the top, the paper slightly thinned at the top right corner, otherwise in very good condition, framed

This impression is illustrated and erroneously described by Kennedy as a second (final) state. In fact, the extensive changes Kennedy describes are not printed but drawn. No impressions showing these proposed changes to the copper plate have ever been located.
