Trumpeter William Howarth, who enlisted prior to 1835, was taken prisoner after participating in the Charge of the Light Brigade on 25.10.1854. Most likely wounded - one source suggests that he lost a leg - he died in captivity. The above award, which first appeared at auction in 1970, is a late claim issued by the authorities to Howarth's next of kin, the style of engraving suggesting it dates from the 1880s.
