Private Robert Clayton was born in Leicester and enlisted into the 14th Foot in December 1813. Present in the Waterloo Campaign in Captain William Betts' Company, he was re-mustered at Chichester in March 1816 and sailed with the 1st Battalion for India. Clayton subsequently purchased his discharge at Meerut in December 1821 and embarked for England early in the following year.
