Mihata Joryu was an artist of great reknown in his time. He was born in Kyoto and studied Shijo painting there under Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845). Joryu specialized in ukiyo-e style paintings of genre scenes and beauties which were influenced understandingly by his Shijo scroll training. His work is in many collections including the Freer Gallery, Washington, D. C.
