The arms are those of George, 5th Baron Vernon, born in 1803 who in 1837 took by Royal Licence the surname Warren, having inherited by his mother's death the estates of that family. He was M.P. for Derbyshire 1831-1832 and for South Derbyshire 1832-1834. He married in 1824 Isabella Caroline, daughter and co-heiress of Cuthburt Ellison. She died in 1853 and he married as his second wife in 1859 his cousin, Frances, daughter of the Rev. Brooke Boothby. He was a well-known figure in the world of literature as a student of Dante and prepared a sumptuous and comprehensive edition of Dante's Inferno. His celebrated library was sold in 1918 (Complete Peerage). He died in 1866.

A similar pair of wine coolers by Smith of the same date was sold in these Rooms, October 30, 1991, lot 149.
