The caduceus mark found on the present pommade pots is found on objects painted with landscapes between 1756-1759. It was ascribed to E. Gomery in the 19th century. Recent scholarship finds no basis for the attribution. However, as confirmed by the present examples, they are by a painter of considerable skill and imagination. See lot 60 of the present sale for a cup and saucer and a sugar-bowl cover from a djeuner painted by the same hand.
