George Ayling was born in London into a family associated with sculling and paddlemaking. He studied at Putney School of Art and specialised in marine subjects and landscapes. He lived near the Thames and was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club.

The present work shows the Upper Pool from the South Bank looking towards Fresh Wharf and New London Bridge with Cannon Street Station and St. Paul's Cathedral beyond.
