Circa 1805, stencilled black marks
The circular enamel clock face inscribed, 'Schmit a Paris' within a square case decorated en grisaille with foliate spandrels, the sides with arabesques, surrmounted by a blue and white 'jasper' urn, flanked by two seated biscuit putti with books, on a rounded rectangular plinth inlaid with blue and white plaques, raised on six toupie feet

Jean Nicolas Schmit is recorded as the chief supplier of works to the firm of Guerhard & Dihl. He had premises on Rue Martin from 1800-1810. See anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 21 October 1997, lot 276 for a similar mantel clock circa 1795.
