Paine describes the Naturalist Graflex thus: 'Essentially an elongated Auto Graflex, the Naturalist was undoubtedly made in very limited quantities; therefore, very few examples exist. Designed solely for the nature photographer, its bulk alone would preclude purchase for most other purchases. At the time, the Naturalist served as an ideal reflex body for full utilization of convertible lenses. The unique two-position hood, which permitted the image to be viewed either from above or from the rear, was not introduced until 1908; the 1907 camera had a rear-view, stationary bellows-hood and a different profile'.

This example has the two-position viewing hood dating it from 1908-1921.
