The motif of the sitter holding a ring may well signify that his profession was that of a goldsmith or jeweller as in Jan van Eyck's portrait of Jan de Leeuw in the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna. Alternatively, the ring could signify a recent betrothal which may have been commemorated with a portrait commission
