A capercaillie

Like his friend Archibald Thorburn, Lodge was greatly influenced by the work of Joseph Wolf, the first major wildlife artist to study and draw animals and birds in their natural habitat. Lodge illustrated a number of ornithological books, the most famous publication being D.A. Bannerman, The Birds of the British Isles, 12 vols., 1953-63. He was a keen sportsman and falconer and continued to paint right up until his death.
