Duchenne is best-known for his published series of photographs on human physiognomy (see lot 151). Although he is known to have made other portraits, presumably for personal reference or research purposes, examples are rare today. There are no similar studies in the collections of the Archives de la Ville de Paris.
Most medical studies from the 19th century show a more obviously objective approach with stark, clear subjects. Although made essentially for medical purposes this is a beautifully-lit and tender portrait.
