The jewellers Castellani first exhibited their work in Florence in 1861 and it has been suggested by Shirley Bury (Jewellery 17899-1910, vol.II, 1991, p.458) that the two addorsed C's mark was possibly adopted on this occasion. For a similarly marked bracelet see Christie's, Geneva, 18 November 1998, lot 519. The small rings on the back of the bracelet may indicate this necklace was intended for wear as a choker or sewn on to the high collar of a dress
