An Unusual Gold Necklace in the Byzantine style by Castellani
Composed of seven shaped circular bloomed gold plaques of slightly convex form, each pierced with heart-shaped ornament and set in the centre with Roman Quinarii, each coin with channelled border and beaded rim, the openwork scroll links between with beaded quatrefoil centres, circa 1860, 16.2 cm long, each plaque applied at the back with small ring for sewn attachment, in case
Each plaque signed with addorsed C's for Castellani

The jewellers Castellani first exhibited their work in Florence in 1861 and it has been suggested by Shirley Bury (Jewellery 17899-1910, vol.II, 1991, p.458) that the two addorsed C's mark was possibly adopted on this occasion. For a similarly marked bracelet see Christie's, Geneva, 18 November 1998, lot 519. The small rings on the back of the bracelet may indicate this necklace was intended for wear as a choker or sewn on to the high collar of a dress
