Bred by Mr. Wyvill, The Colonel was by Whisker out of My Lady's Dam. Purchased by the Hon. Edward Petre as a yearling, at two he won three races. At three, he won the 1828 St. Leger and was second in the run off for the Derby (won by Cadland), after the first dead-heat in Derby history. Purchased by His Majesty King George IV for 4,000, he won the 1830 Craven Stakes and Great Park Stakes at Epsom as well as a race at Stockbridge. He repeated his Craven Stakes win in 1831 and was retired to stud at Hampton Court.
