The circumstances under which this recording was made accounts for its surprisingly good quality. Recorded by the Chief Technician at Bournemouth's Gaumont Theatre on a Verdik tape recorder, rather than through the theatre's sound system, it gives a true impression of how The Beatles' performance sounded in the theatre that night. The recording was made by the technician purely for appraisal purposes so that the artists, in this instance The Beatles, could hear what they sounded like. Although there was a bit of screaming from the audience between songs, this tape was made before the fans' yelling really began to drown out The Beatles music and all the ten songs they play are perfectly audible throughout. Interestingly, two of the songs performed on this occasion were not part of their standard live repertoire: these were Chains and Baby It's You from their first album Please Please Me. Also the group can be heard playing the chorus of From Me To You as they leave the stage.
This recording also shows that at this stage in their career The Beatles were still indulging in jokey repartee with the audience when introducing their songs. On this occasion the introductions were generally made by McCartney, punctuated by comments from Lennon which frequently made the fans laugh. McCartney introduces She Loves You as ..A new song for us ...released on Friday at which point Lennon shouts Buy your copy please!. McCartney gets a laugh from the audience however, when introducing the Lennon and McCartney song I Saw Her Standing There he refers to it as ...a song recorded a long time ago by someone we admire very much - the great coloured gospel singer Victor Sylvester!. Lennon also causes merriment in the audience when he refers to Sophie Tucker as his favourite group in his introduction to Baby It's You -- a joke repeated by McCartney later on that year at the Royal Command Performance.
