NEWTON, Sir ISAAC. Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica... Editio secunda auctior et emendatior. Cambridge, 1713. Engraved folding plate and numerous woodcut diagrams in text. 4to, contemporary calf, rebacked in antique style, corners repaired; some marginal dampstaining at a few places. Second edition, one of about 750 copies according to Babson. "Richard Bentley, Master of the Trinity College, was instrumental in bringing out this second edition, which was edited by Roger Cotes, F.R.S. In his important preface, Cotes attacks the Cartesian philosophy, then still in vogue in the universities, and refutes an asertion that Newton's theory of attraction is a causa occulta. It contains a second preface by Newton and considerable additions, the chapters on the lunar theory and the theory of comets being much enlarged." Babson 12.
