Sessa and brothers, 1586. 23 unusual woodcut illustrations, Sessa's "cat and mouse" woodcut device on title. 8vo, 18th-century Italian vellum, some wear at head and foot; title repaired and laid down, lacks final blank, few 18th c. manuscript notes, short closed tear to O5, minor worming to blank margins of first few leaves. This early work on mnemonics contains, in a full-page woodcut of buildings, one of the earliest illustrations of a bookstore. Also of note is the very early phrenological illustration, a woodcut of a human head with type labels indicating parts relevant to memory. Mortimer talian 157 (earlier edition).
