The Houri was built at Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, surveyed by Lloyd's in nearby Miramichi Bay and rated AI upon completion. Registered at 966 tons, she measured 175 feet in length with a 34½ foot beam and originally traded from Canada into Liverpool. By the early 1870's, she had been sold to Thomas & Co. of Liverpool who started running her to China. More significantly, by then she had been re-rigged as a barque thus dating this painting to very early in her career.
