The story of Aeneas' flight from Troy is told in the Aeneid, 2, 671-729.

The main figures of this picture, Aeneas, Anchises, Ascanius and Achates(?) with the household gods, correspond closely with those in the picture by Jan Brueghel I in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere etc., Cologne, 1979, p. 131, fig. 135, and p. 561, no. 26), which is the only work of the subject accepted by Ertz (p. 130) as by Jan Brueghel I.
