D-AERE was the prototype, the Focke-Wulf 200 V1; it was named 'Brandenburg' and first flew on 27th July 1937.

It was later registered as D-ACON and named 'Umbau', making two major flights in this identity. It set the record for Berlin-New York-Berlin between 10th and 13th August 1938 at an average of 199mph (302km/h).

It then flew Berlin-Basra-Karachi-Hanoi-Tokyo on 28th-30th November 1938, a distance of 8,602 miles (3,844km.) at an average of 205mph. It was subsequently forced to ditch during a demonstration flight off Manila.
