Thomas Johnson and Isaac Perrins,

hand-coloured engraving by J. Grozer, London: W. Richardson, November 5, 1789, sheet size 14 x 17½in. (35.5 x 44.5cm) Lynch, plate VII.

Le boxeur blessé et ses parieurs consternés. Scènes anglaises desinées à Londres par un franais prisonnier de guerre, hand-coloured engraving, Paris: Martinet, 9¼ x 11in. (some crease marks and light soiling), framed and glazed.
The fight between Johnson and Perrins took place at Banbury, Oxfordshire, on 2 October 1789. Johnson, whose real name was Jackling, became the winner after 62 rounds, lasting an hour and a quarter. But it was the courage of the taller and heavier Perrins which became legendary and provided "the inspiration of the prize ring for generations afterwards." The second print, showing anxious attempts to revive a beaten boxer with a quart of ale, is an unusual and vividly-rendered scene. (2)
