The 'Black Pavillions' were the rebels from the Taiping movement which had their origin in China. Settled in North Vietnam, they collaborated with the other local rebel groups in their fight against the French. They tried to attack Hanoi on the 21st of December 1873; defending the city was a military force consisting soldiers of French origin, Vietnamese Catholics and the opposing groups of the Tu Duc Dynasty. The rebellion was crushed on 9 May 1883, constituting another French victory in the colony.
